Hello to everyone,
These are some of the things going on in the district at this time. Feel free to call if you have any questions.
Candidate Search Update
Our search committee chairs Mike Lokken and Marv Kading are looking for qualified candidates to run for Congress against Collin Peterson. They are in the process of interviewing seven people at this time. These seven have either emailed me or their names have been referred to me by other people. Mike and Marv are also looking for state House and Senate candidates. Do you want to run or do you know anyone who has this desire? Or do you desire to run for a House or Senate seat? Please contact Mike Lokken at mikelokken@gmail.com, Marv Kading at mkading@gvtel.com, or Craig Bishop at chairman@mncd7gop.com.
Fundraising Efforts
Our fundraising team has been meeting via conference call once a week since the middle of August. We have three areas we are attempting to raise money in. One is through major speaking events, secondly a membership drive and thirdly, selling of merchandise. We are considering participating in an event with the College Republicans at Bemidji State. Can you help us with fundraising? If so, please contact me at chairman@mncd7gop.com.
District Convention in Moorhead on April 9th and April 10th.
Our District Convention has been scheduled to be in Moorhead on April 9th and 10th at the AmericInn. This is the same place we had our convention two years ago. We are still working to secure a keynote speaker for Friday night.
State Convention October 2nd and 3rd
The State Convention will be held October 2nd and 3rd in Saint Paul at the River Center. Friday night at 7:00 will be a governor’s candidate forum at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 11 East Kellog Blvd in Saint Paul. The cost is $10.00. Saturday we will be debating and voting on changes to our State Constitution and there will be a governor’s straw poll. I encourage you to attend both days. The straw poll will be a strong indicator of who will be our leading candidates for our governor’s endorsement at out state convention in the spring.
Contract with Minnesota
What do we do when our candidates stray from our platform after getting elected? One suggestion is to allow the delegates to put forth a contract with our candidates to sign before receiving the endorsement. This would commit them to do certain things after the election and keep them accountable to the principles of the party. This is just an idea and the delegates will decide at the District Convention in Moorhead whether to accept this or reject it. Are you interested in being a part of this? If so please contact Glen Gruenhagen at gruenhagen624@embarqmail.com.
Technology Update - Polling On Our Website
We are really excited about being able to sort our database by BPOU. This has allowed us to send out emails to specific BPOUs or groups of BPOUs. Let us know if you’d like a message sent out to your BPOU. Also, traffic continues to increase on our website. Specifically, our events page is getting a lot of use. Please let us know about any events in or near your BPOU – we’d like to post them. Our events page can be found at www.mncd7gop.com/events. We’ve also recently introduced a poll on our site. We’re still working on how it looks, but our poll is 100% functional, so go ahead and vote for your favorite candidate at www.mncd7gop.com/polls. Do you know of someone that is interested in receiving our updates? Send their name, email address, and zip code to republicans@mncd7gop.com. We currently have 2,500 email addresses, which is good, but there are a lot more than 2,500 Republicans in our district!
Renville County-September 14th
Don Hoversten and I will be attending a BPOU meeting in Renville County on September 14th. Thank you to Collin Berg, Renville County Chair for inviting us to attend your meeting! We’ve attended several BPOU meetings already and we look forward to attending more. We’ve used this opportunity to share information about technology, share what tools the district has available to BPOUs, and learn from the BPOUs.
Young Republicans Group
Ben Anderson, our 7th District Secretary wants to start a Young Republicans Group for anyone between the ages of 18-40. There are currently groups started in congressional districts 1, 4, 5, and 6. If you are interested in joining this please contact Ben Anderson at benbanderson@gmail.com or you can call him at 218.526.0493. You can learn more about Young Republicans at http://www.minnesotayr.com
Poll Watching Committee
The chair of our Poll Watching Committee is Arles Kumpula and Arles is looking for volunteers right now – we don’t want to wait until the last minute. Consider being an election judge to oversee voter registrations to make sure our elections are fair. Voucher voting is one of the many concerns we have. We want to make sure that the process is fair, and the way to do that is to make sure that we have representatives at the polls. Contact Arles at arles@arvig.net if you can help.
Sincerely,
Craig Bishop
